[[Summary::This powerful +2 heavy shield gives a warrior a profound advantage over a spellcasting opponent.]]

Spell shields are kite shields created by the Harpers to aid their members in taking down dangerous magic users. As such, they carry the insignia of a specific harper agency, which is emblazoned proudly upon the shield's pennon. The shields glimmer in a dimly purple sheen that hints at strong magics of their own.

A spell shield's shield bonus to AC also applies to touch attacks, including incorporeal touch attacks.

Once per day as a standard action, the wearer can activate the shield's spellward ability. The spellward is a barrier that protects the wearer by absorbing all incoming spells and spell-like abilities up to a certain level. Spells that are harmless to the wearer are ignored. The spellward lasts up to 1 round per 2 character levels and automatically disappears as soon as it has absorbed more than a specific amount of spell levels (see table). Any absorbed spell is completely nullified upon the wearer, even if its level is higher than the spellward's remaining capacity. The spellward absorbs both targeted and area-effect spells, but does not alter the way in which spells affect creatures other than the wearer, nor does it stop spells that ignore spell resistance.

Spells that target particular items on the wearer's person are also absorbed by a spellward, and so are dispel attempts. An antimagic field however collapses the spellward until the wearer leaves the affected area, and a mage's disjunction destroys the spellward.
